The future of Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk with the club has been put in doubt following the announcement of Jurgen Klopp’s departure as manager at the end of the season.
The 32-year-old center-back has just 18 months remaining on his contract, and he has refused to commit his long-term future to the club.
When asked if he would be part of the next era at Anfield after Klopp leaves, Van Dijk replied with uncertainty, saying that the club will have a big job on its hands to replace not only the manager but the whole staff, and he is curious to know which direction that will go in.
Van Dijk further added that he is still part of Klopp’s era and doesn’t like to speak about it, and the end of Klopp’s tenure will mark a significant change for the club, which will need to be addressed.
Several key figures are set to leave the club, including sporting director Jorg Schmadtke and coaches Pep Lijnders, Peter Krawietz, and Vitor Matos.
Van Dijk is waiting to see who arrives as their replacement before deciding his future.
He is adamant that the squad’s mentality is still the same following Klopp’s decision to step down and that nothing has changed at the moment.
Van Dijk further stated that the team has to keep doing the same things, and it is his job to ensure that the team maintains its focus on achieving success.
The former Red Xabi Alonso is the favourite to take over at Anfield following his success with Bayer Leverkusen, guiding the German club to the Bundesliga summit.
Meanwhile, Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi and Tottenham’s Ange Postecoglou are also understood to be on Liverpool’s radar.
At the end of the season, the club will face different things happening, and it will be up to the club to sort those out.
