Senegal’s President Bassirou Faye has been appointed by ECOWAS to mediate with Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to reverse their decision to secede.
During the 65th ECOWAS session in Abuja, Nigeria, Faye was tasked with leading a mediation team alongside Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbe.
This appointment marks Faye’s first participation in an ECOWAS meeting since his election in March.

The summit followed the announcement of a coalition by the three nations, who left ECOWAS in January after disagreements over the bloc’s stance on coups.
Originally consisting of 15 members, ECOWAS now has 12.
The summit voiced disappointment over the lack of progress with the breakaway nations and instructed the development of a contingency plan should mediation fail.
