The Nigerian Navy has enlisted 1,486 individuals to enhance the manpower required for efficient internal security operations in the Niger Delta.
The state minister for defence, Bello Matawalle, revealed this information during the graduation parade of the Nigerian Navy’s Batch 35 Trainees at the Nigeria Navy Basic Training School in Onne, Rivers, on Saturday.
According to him, the recruits completed six months of intensive warfare and maritime combat training, preparing them for the current battle against oil thieves, pipeline vandals, and sea pirates, among other offenders.
“These young men and women are joining the Nigerian Navy at a crucial time when the Armed Forces require individuals with the strength, bravery, and determination to tackle the security challenges we encounter.
“They will be deployed across various units and formations to support the ongoing internal security efforts,” stated the minister.
Mr. Matawalle stressed that the recruitment is crucial for the navy’s capacity-building initiatives to cultivate effective operational forces that can confront both internal and external threats.
He emphasized that the addition of the right manpower and skilled personnel is crucial to the naval fleet’s ongoing expansion efforts.
“The navy is committed to increasing its capacity through infrastructure development, initiating various operations, conducting patrols powered by technology, and acquiring and recapitalizing platforms.
“Two 76-meter offshore patrol vessels are anticipated from Turkey, and three more fast attack crafts from China, among others, are expected to strengthen the navy’s fleet.
“I am delighted to announce that Operation Delta Sanity, launched to combat oil theft, has boosted crude oil production to 1,428,613 barrels per day, up from less than 1,000,000 in the previous six months,” he stated.
The minister highlighted the navy’s participation in joint exercises and training with international naval counterparts to improve local competencies.
Mr. Matawalle advised the new naval ratings to remain disciplined, obedient, and nonpartisan, demonstrating steadfast loyalty to the military and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
He warned the ratings that desertion and disloyalty would lead to harsh repercussions for those found culpable.
