Operatives from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted three trailer loads of opioids in Abule Ado, Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.
According to a statement by Mr. Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, three suspects were arrested in connection with the seizure, which included 3,450,000 pills and 344,000 bottles of codeine syrup.
The consignments, valued at multi-billion naira, were loaded into two 40-ft container trucks and another 20-ft truck at the AML bonded terminal, Abule-Osun, near the International Trade Fair complex.
Subsequently, the trucks headed to a warehouse at Abule-Ado where NDLEA officers arrested the suspects and recovered the opioid consignments on May 9.
Among those apprehended were the warehouse agent, Cosmas Obiajulu (51), Ridwan Balogun (25), and Banjo Tayo (30), drivers of two of the trucks.
Another driver managed to escape arrest. Additionally, NDLEA operatives arrested a suspect, Nwankwo Ejike, in the Coker area of Lagos, seizing 100 liters of codeine syrup from him. Sixty liters of the same substance were confiscated from Clinton Akinye in the same area.
In another operation, 37.5kg of marijuana concealed in a Toyota Camry was intercepted at Mile 12 area of Lagos on May 6, leading to the arrest of suspect Adegbola Segun (47).
Further interceptions included a consignment of opioids, comprising 59,106 pills of tramadol and various quantities of codeine syrup and rohypnol, intended for transportation to Garua, Cameroon. Two suspects linked to the drugs, Abubakar Auwal (39) and Adamu Abubakar (25), were arrested on the Mubi-Yola Road in Adamawa state.
In Edo, NDLEA operatives raided the Iguiye forest in Ovia Northeast LGA, destroying 11,636.185kg of marijuana on three farms. An additional 188kg of the same substance was recovered, and suspect Itah Nyong was arrested during the operation.
In separate incidents, a 75-year-old man, Jibril Audu, was apprehended in possession of 7.5 kilograms of marijuana at Oke-asa village, Ijero-Ekiti, Ekiti state, while another suspect, Tikwase Nytor (70), was nabbed with 15.6kg of marijuana during a raid operation at Achusa and International Market Road, Makurdi, Benue State.
