DeChambeau, the 2020 US Open winner, held a three-shot lead after day three. McIlroy stormed back with superb long birdie putts, taking a two-stroke advantage with five holes remaining. However, his putting deserted him at the crucial moment, leaving the door open for DeChambeau.
DeChambeau, despite struggling off the tee, capitalized on McIlroy’s misfortune. A miraculous escape from a bunker on 18, followed by a clutch four-foot putt, sealed his victory. This win marks a transformation for DeChambeau, showcasing a more composed approach alongside his signature power hitting.

McIlroy, visibly dejected, left the course without comment. This defeat adds to his string of near misses in majors since his 2014 PGA Championship win. His next chance to break the drought comes in five weeks at The Open.
While DeChambeau thrived, other contenders faltered. Patrick Cantlay remained consistent but never mounted a serious challenge. Tony Finau impressed with a third-round 67, while early leader Ludvig Aberg faded after a weekend triple-bogey. England’s Tommy Fleetwood and Aaron Rai finished strong, while Tyrrell Hatton and Scottie Scheffler had disappointing final rounds.
Pinehurst lived up to its reputation as a brutal test. Only eight golfers finished under par, including DeChambeau, who emerged victorious after a thrilling battle with McIlroy.
