Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has voiced serious concerns about the country’s unchecked population growth, cautioning that it poses significant challenges for the future. This statement was made during an interaction with journalists following the Eid prayer at the township Eid ground, where he joined the Emir of Daura, Dr. Faruk Umar Faruk, on Sunday. The information was relayed through a statement by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu.
Reflecting on the large crowds present at the Eid in Daura, Buhari highlighted the potential problems stemming from rapid population growth, emphasizing the need for more extensive dialogue and increased investment in education and healthcare.
Despite these concerns, Buhari expressed satisfaction that more Nigerians are turning to farming, which he believes is crucial for reducing food prices and ensuring national food security. He extended his Sallah greetings to all, urging citizens to embrace agriculture as a means to combat rising food costs.
“I wish everyone a Happy Sallah. May this special festival bring joy, prosperity, and good health to all,” Buhari said.
He appealed to Nigerians to strive for self-reliance by producing and consuming locally grown food, stressing that now is not the time to relent in the face of rising prices.
Buhari also encouraged the youth to actively participate in nation-building efforts, drawing inspiration from the nation’s founding fathers and significant regional figures. He underscored the importance of community support and mutual assistance, especially during challenging times.
In a traditional address to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, who customarily visit him during Sallah, Buhari praised the scheme as a unifying force in Nigeria. He urged future administrations to continue strengthening the NYSC, which he lauded as one of General Yakubu Gowon’s greatest achievements as Head of State.
As part of his annual gesture, the former president donated a cow, ten bags of rice, and cash to the NYSC members to help them celebrate the occasion.
