The African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Omoyele Sowore, has sent a pointed message to Doyin Okupe, the former director general of the Peter Obi 2023 Presidential Campaign Organisation.
This follows Okupe’s earlier statement that President Bola Tinubu was the best candidate in the 2023 elections, a comment that sparked significant backlash online. Okupe claimed that 80 per cent of the criticism he faced came from a particular ethnic group. Defending his stance, he asserted his commitment to national unity and friendship, despite the insults and intolerance directed at him.
“No matter the insult, intolerance, and display of uncouthness, I will remain what I have always been—a true nationalist. We have invested too much in each other to go back on our commitment to brotherhood and national unity. This new wave of bigotry will not undo the friendship already established,”
Okupe wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
In response, Sowore reminded Okupe of their conversation before the 2023 election, recalling how he declined Okupe’s request to support Peter Obi in 2022. Sowore highlighted Okupe’s history of not supporting progressive causes and referenced past political events to underline his point.
“What did I tell you when you invited me to join your ‘Gbajue Movement’ in 2022? I told you then that you’ve never supported a progressive cause in your life. Following that, before ending the call, I told you that you’ve not learned your lessons, especially after the June 12 NRC saga. You see your life now!”
