Government Cites Improved Security for Decision
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the removal of the long-standing ban on mining activities in Zamfara State, five years after it was initially imposed. This decision was revealed by Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, through his spokesperson Segun Tomori during a press briefing on Sunday.
Economic Opportunities in Zamfara’s Mineral Wealth
Alake highlighted the economic potential of Zamfara, noting its rich deposits of gold, lithium, and copper. He stated that lifting the ban would stimulate economic activity in a region known for its mineral wealth, thereby benefiting the national economy.
Previous Ban Led to Illegal Mining Exploitation
The minister acknowledged that while the 2019 ban was aimed at curbing security threats associated with mining, it inadvertently led to an increase in illegal mining operations. This has, until now, deprived the country of legitimate revenue from these resources.
Security Improvements Pave Way for Legal Mining
Significant strides in security, including the neutralization of key bandit commanders like Halilu Sububu, have contributed to a safer environment, Alake explained. This improved security scenario was a crucial factor in deciding to lift the ban, allowing the mining sector in Zamfara to contribute to Nigeria’s revenue.
Enhanced Regulation and Intelligence Gathering
With the ban lifted, Alake emphasized that this would not only regulate mining activities more effectively but also enhance intelligence operations against illegal mining. This strategic move aims to secure the state’s mineral resources for national benefit.
Clarification on International Agreements
Addressing recent controversies, Alake clarified the nature of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with France, dismissing claims of relinquishing control over Nigeria’s minerals or entering military pacts. He stressed that the MOU focuses on training and capacity building, similar to agreements with Germany and Australia, to boost local capabilities in the mining sector.
