The 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary saw some impressive performances in the 100m heats.
Sha’Carri Richardson made her debut in the Championships and set the bar high, posting the fastest time with a sub-11 second run of 10.92.
Despite a false start delaying her heat, the American sprinter led the pack from the front to secure her place in the semi-finals. Richardson was not the only runner to break the 11-second barrier.
Julien Alfred of St Lucia clocked an impressive 10.99 in the opening heat,
while Poland’s Ewa Swoboda posted a time of 10.98.
These three runners set the pace for what is sure to be an exciting competition.
Reigning world champions Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson also made their mark in the heats.
Fraser-Pryce, sporting red-dyed hair, ran comfortably in Heat 7 to qualify for the semi-finals with a time of 11.01.
Her teammate Jackson won Heat 4 with a time of 11.06, securing her own place in the next round.
Reflecting on her performance, Fraser-Pryce said, “I’m feeling good after getting the first round out of the way. First one is usually a little bit mix and match, but I think I was able to have a good one. I felt good. It has been a challenging season, but nothing that I’m not used to and for me, I guess I’m a warrior.”

Dina Asher-Smith, the 2019 world champion from Great Britain, also made it through to the semi-finals.
She finished second in her heat with a time of 11.04 seconds, demonstrating that she is still a formidable competitor in the 100m event.
Overall, the heats of the 100m event at the 2023 World Athletics Championships were filled with impressive performances from some of the world’s top sprinters.
It sets the stage for an exciting semi-final and final round in the days to come.
