The US Open tennis tournament is heating up as the top-ranked players battle it out in the early rounds.
In the latest match, Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, the third seed and defending champion, faced off against Argentina’s Sebastian Baez.
The match proved to be a thrilling contest, with Baez putting up a spirited challenge throughout.
However, Medvedev held his nerve and emerged victorious in three sets, winning 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).
The Russian star was coming off a late-night match against Chris O’Connell, which he also won, but admitted that the quick turnaround was tough on him.
In another match, Alexander Zverev, the fourth seed, booked his place in the last 16 with a hard-fought win over Grigor Dimitrov.
Zverev lost the first set in a tie-breaker but bounced back to win the next three sets, 7-6, 6-1, 6-1.
He will now face Italy’s Jannik Sinner in the next round, who defeated former champion Stan Wawrinka in his previous match.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Andrey Rublev secured his last-16 spot with a come-from-behind victory over Arthur Rinderknech of France.
After losing the first set, Rublev rallied to win the next three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, 7-5. Rublev, the eighth seed, will face Britain’s Jack Draper in the next round.
