Announcement from Federal Executive Council
In a significant move, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University. This decision was announced by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, after the final FEC meeting of 2024 at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.
History of University of Abuja
Originally established in January 1988 under Decree No. 110 of 1992, the University of Abuja, or UNIABUJA, has operated as a dual-mode institution, offering both conventional and distance learning programs. The academic journey of the university began in 1990 with the matriculation of its first students.
Honoring Yakubu Gowon
The renaming honors General Yakubu Gowon, who served as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1966 to 1975. His leadership during a pivotal time in Nigeria’s history has left a lasting impact on the nation’s development.
Additional Government Initiatives
During the same address, Minister Idris also revealed that President Bola Tinubu has approved free transportation across the nation to celebrate the Christmas season. This initiative includes free train services from December 20, 2024, to January 5, 2025, aimed at easing travel for the public during the festive period.
FEC Recess Announcement
Furthermore, Idris announced that the FEC would go into recess from December 18, 2024, until January 6, 2025, marking the end of official governmental activities for the year.
