The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has refuted claims made in a viral video that suggested a lecturer from the university had molested a female student, labeling the video as misleading.
Dr. Sam Kpenu, the university spokesperson, addressed the issue in a statement released in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, denouncing the allegation as ‘false and without foundation.’
“We are cognizant of a spurious claim being shared online that a UNIPORT lecturer was captured in a viral video engaging in the molestation of a female student in his office.
“This claim is unfounded and without merit, as no such incident involving any lecturer from the university has been reported.
“Following an exhaustive investigation, the university has verified that the event shown in the viral video did not take place at UNIPORT, nor did it involve any member of our staff,” he stated.
Kpenu affirmed that the university maintains the highest levels of integrity, ethics, and professionalism.
“UNIPORT does not tolerate any form of misconduct, particularly those that affect the safety and welfare of our students.
“We are committed to ensuring a secure and supportive learning environment for every member of our academic community.
“We urge the public and media to exercise restraint and refrain from disseminating misinformation that could harm the reputations of individuals and institutions,” he added.
It should be noted that a video that surfaced online on Monday depicted a man engaging in inappropriate behavior with a young woman in an office setting.
