The University of Abuja has named Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi as its new vice-chancellor, marking her as the seventh individual to hold this position.

The appointment was ratified during the 77th Extraordinary Meeting of the University’s Governing Council, chaired by Air Vice-Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita. The decision was made public on December 31, 2024, with Maikudi’s term commencing on January 1, 2025, and set to last for a non-renewable period of five years.
Selection Process and Acting Tenure
According to a statement by Habib Yakoob, the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Professor Maikudi was selected from ten candidates after interviews conducted by the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board, adhering strictly to the university’s appointment protocols. Prior to this, she served as the acting vice-chancellor since July 5, 2024, during which she managed to navigate the University through a significant crisis, showcasing her leadership capabilities.

Background and Academic Journey
Born in Katsina State on January 31, 1983, Professor Maikudi has built an impressive academic career. Her educational path started at Sacred Heart School, Kaduna, followed by Queens College, Yaba, Lagos. She pursued higher education at the University of Reading, securing an LLB in 2004, and later specialized with an LLM in Public International Law from the London School of Economics in 2005. She completed her legal education at the Nigerian Law School before earning a PhD in International Law from the University of Abuja in 2015.
Professional Progression at UniAbuja
Joining the University of Abuja in 2008 as a Lecturer II, Maikudi progressed through the academic ranks, achieving the status of professor in 2021. Her appointment as vice-chancellor is seen as a continuation of her significant contributions to the academic community at UniAbuja.
