Renewables Outshine Fossil Fuels
In a landmark year for environmental progress, Britain recorded its cleanest electricity generation ever in 2024. According to a study by Carbon Brief, fossil fuel usage for electricity production dropped to an all-time low of 29%, while renewable sources surged to 45% of the total electricity mix.
End of Coal and Future Policy
The closure of Britain’s last coal-fired power station in October marked a significant milestone, making the UK the first G7 nation to eliminate coal from its electricity generation. Following this, the Labour government announced intentions in November to prohibit the establishment of new coal mines.
Nuclear and Imports
Nuclear energy contributed 13% to the UK’s electricity, with an additional 11% being sourced through imports. Despite these advancements, gas remained the largest single source of electricity, although projections suggest wind power might soon overtake it.

Government Commitments to Green Energy
Under Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s leadership, the UK has set ambitious targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 81% from 1990 levels by 2035, aiming for net zero by 2050. This shift towards cleaner energy is part of a broader response to the cost-of-living crisis exacerbated by the Ukraine conflict, which significantly increased energy bills.
Current Energy Challenges
Despite these green achievements, the UK continues to grapple with high energy costs, particularly as the country experiences colder weather at the onset of the year, keeping energy bills elevated.
