Following Manchester United’s 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich in their Champions League Group A opener, goalkeeper Andre Onana took full responsibility for his team’s loss.
The German side scored twice in four minutes in the first half at the Allianz Arena, with Onana’s mistake leading to their first goal.
The Cameroon international had let winger Leroy Sane’s tame shot slip past him and into the net, which set Bayern on their way to victory.
Onana, who was signed on a £47.2m deal from Inter Milan this summer as a replacement for David De Gea, admitted that his start to life at Man Utd has not gone as planned.
He described his performance in the match as “one of the worst games I’ve played.”
The goalkeeper expressed his disappointment, saying, “It’s difficult to lose this way as we started very good but after my mistake, we lost control of the game.”
He acknowledged that it was a difficult situation for him and his team, especially since he felt he had let them down.
Onana, however, was also quick to point out the positives, praising his team’s work and determination, despite the loss.

United manager Erik ten Hag also expressed his faith in Onana.
He stated that the goalkeeper had the mindset to bounce back and that he was a crucial player for the team.
