Shortly after hosting a national dialogue on policing, the House of Representatives plans to conduct a two-day retreat focused on economic transformation and development. This event aims to enhance members’ proficiency in economic development and tax reform.
The House spokesperson, Akin Rotimi (APC Ekiti), announced that the retreat is scheduled to be inaugurated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday, April 30, at the Abuja Continental Hotel, previously known as the Abuja Sheraton.
The retreat’s theme, “Navigating Change: Legislative Strategies for Economic Transformation,” is set in partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and Konrad-Adenauer Stiftung.
Rotimi highlighted that the retreat is part of an ongoing effort to work with legislative support institutions and partners to continue capacity-building programs for members.
He elaborated, “Consistent with its Legislative Agenda that emphasizes Economic Growth and Development, the People’s House recognizes the pivotal role of the legislature in directing a nation’s economic course and indirectly influencing the economic climate through its legislative and oversight functions.”
The retreat is intended to enhance members’ comprehension of the Petroleum Industry Act’s role in revolutionizing the oil and gas sector. It will also cover the parliament’s involvement in tax reforms and the significance of effective oversight in public financial management and tax administration.
Expected attendees at the retreat include Mele Kolo Kyari, Group CEO of NNPCL; Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Hon. Minister of State for Petroleum Resources; Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, Executive Secretary of NEITI; and Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, Chairman of ICPC.
Other notable figures include Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio and former House Speakers Aminu Bello Masari and Mrs. Patricia Olubunmi Etteh. Yakubu Dogara and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila will also be part of the event.
