The President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) has expressed high hopes for the country’s team ahead of the World Wrestling Championships in Serbia.
The 11-member squad, including six wrestlers, two coaches, one medical personnel and two officials, arrived in Belgrade after departing from Abuja, Nigeria.
The tournament, which is also the first Olympic qualifier, will run from September 16 to 22.
The NWF President, Daniel Igali, who arrived a day earlier, welcomed the team and urged them to quickly settle in and prepare for the challenges that lie ahead.
Igali expressed confidence in the team’s exceptional talent and unwavering determination, hoping that they would secure multiple podium finishes.

Captain of Team Nigeria, Blessing Oborududu, outlined the team’s ambition to excel in multiple categories and reach the finals, vying for medals.
Olympic silver medallist, Oborududu, expressed optimism about the team’s performance, highlighting that their focus extends beyond wrestling to encompass a broad range of disciplines.
Meanwhile, first-time participant, Hannah Reuben, expressed her excitement to make her debut in the prestigious global competition and make Nigerians proud.
The team will compete in various categories, including Mercy Genesis in 50kg, Odunayo Adekuoroye in 57kg, and Hannah Reuben in 76kg categories on the 19th and 20th.
Blessing Oborududu, Esther Kolawale, and Ogunsanya Christiana Tolulope will compete in the 68kg, 62kg, and 53kg categories, respectively, on the 20th and 21st.
The NWF President extended his appreciation to the Nigeria Olympic Committee, the Federal Ministry of Sports, and the Bayelsa State government for their support in ensuring Team Nigeria’s participation in the tournament.
