The Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, has expressed displeasure over the insecurity in the North Central region of the country and called upon security agencies to take drastic measures to arrest the unholy situation.
President of the NUJ in Zone D, Chris Atsaka made the call in a statement after the abduction of the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism in Benue State, Matthew Abo.
Abo had been reportedly seized by gunmen in his hometown in Ukum local government area of Benue State.
Atsaka condemned the abduction of the commission and the unending insecurity plaguing the region.
According to him, the continues insecurity in the region has crippled the economic activities and if drastic steps are not immediately taken to tackle the trend, it will become more chaotic.
Atsaka highlighted with regret the spate of abductions, kidnappings, banditry and other forms of criminal activities, urging the government and security agencies to redouble efforts at safeguarding the masses.
He comdemned activities of bandits in Niger State as well as the continued herdsmen /farmers crisis on the Plateau, Benue and Nasarawa States which he claimed is stunting economic growth in the zone.
Meanwhile, the Vice President sympathized with the people and government of the affected zones, calling for decisive action to restore normalcy in the area.
