On Monday in Abuja, Sen. John Owan-Enoh, the Minister of Sports Development, pledged his full support towards the development of para-sports in Nigeria.
The pledge comes after Nigeria’s impressive performance at the maiden 2023 African Para Games in Accra, Ghana.
Despite facing financial challenges, Team Nigeria managed to clinch two medals in the women’s wheelchair tennis, singles and doubles categories.
In a statement issued by the Director of Press in the ministry, Mohammed Manga, the minister congratulated the Nigerian team for making the nation proud.
He expressed his passion for supporting para-sports and promised to strengthen the existing medium that was created to coordinate, promote, and manage the development of para-sports in Nigeria for better performance.

He added that it was important to utilize para-sports as a tool for accelerated social integration and inclusion of persons living with disabilities and that the Tinubu-led administration was committed to using sports to empower those living with disabilities and tackling poverty alleviation.
The minister called on all relevant stakeholders to join the government in developing para-sports in the country, intending to give the athletes a sense of belonging.
The Games, which started on September 3 with over 20 countries participating, will come to an end on Tuesday.
