In a significant move to bolster Ukraine’s defences against the ongoing conflict, Spain is poised to deliver a substantial military aid package valued at €1.13 billion (US$1.23 billion). This commitment, according to a report by El Pais newspaper on Monday, will include a shipment of highly sought-after Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems and a contingent of German-made Leopard 2A4 tanks.
Citing unidentified sources familiar with the operation, El Pais details the specific weaponry Spain plans to contribute. The package will reportedly encompass twelve Patriot missiles, crucial for defending against aerial attacks. Additionally, Spain will send nineteen pre-owned Leopard 2A4 tanks, bolstering Ukraine’s ground forces. To further enhance Ukraine’s defensive capabilities, the package is expected to include Spanish-made anti-drone equipment and ammunition.
The official announcement of this substantial aid package is expected to take place during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Madrid on Monday. Zelensky is scheduled to meet with both Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and King Felipe VI to discuss the ongoing situation and solidify this critical military support.
While the Spanish government approved the overall value of the aid package last month, details regarding the specific weaponry were not disclosed at that time. Prime Minister Sanchez’s spokespersons remain tight-lipped, declining to comment on El Pais’ report.
