Sir Alex Ferguson is set to depart from his ambassadorial position with Manchester United at the end of the season, a role he has held since stepping down as manager in 2013. The decision is part of a broader cost-cutting initiative implemented by the club, now under the ownership of INEOS, which has been managing football operations following the acquisition of a minority stake by Jim Ratcliffe earlier this year.
Ferguson, 82, who famously led the club to 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League victories, will continue to serve as a non-executive director on the football club’s board. The decision to end his ambassadorial role was reportedly made amicably, with Ferguson remaining a familiar presence at matches.
This move comes in the wake of significant financial challenges for the club, which recently reported losses of £113.2 million for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024. This marks the fifth consecutive year of losses for Manchester United. In addition to Ferguson’s departure, the club has initiated various cost-saving measures, including a redundancy program that has resulted in approximately 250 job cuts.
