On Thursday, April 18, the Senate announced the postponement of its resumption to April 30.
Chinedu Akubueze, the Clerk to the Senate, conveyed the decision in a brief message distributed to Senators in Abuja.
The notice, titled “For the information of Distinguished Senators: Notice of postponement of resumption,” stated: “Distinguished Senators are respectfully informed that the resumption of plenary, previously scheduled for Tuesday, April 23, 2024, has been further postponed to Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at 11 am.
Please note that the plenary session will take place in the main Chamber of the Senate. We deeply regret any inconvenience this postponement may cause to the Distinguished Senators.”
Similarly, the House of Representatives also deferred its resumption to April 30th on Wednesday.
This marks the second deferment of the National Assembly’s resumption since it adjourned on March 22 for the Easter and Sallah celebrations.
Initially, the resumption was moved from Tuesday, April 16 to Tuesday, April 23, and it has now been shifted from April 23 to April 30.
The postponement by the House of Representatives was to provide time for the completion of renovations in the main chambers of the National Assembly, allowing for plenary sessions upon return.
In July 2022, both the Senate and the House of Representatives relocated to temporary chambers to continue their sessions due to the start of refurbishments in the National Assembly Complex, which cost N30 billion.
