Mohamed Salah’s brilliance shone once again as Liverpool overcame a scare to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday. The Egyptian forward’s second-half double preserved Liverpool’s position at the top of the Premier League, extending their lead to eight points.

Liverpool initially looked in control after Dominik Szoboszlai capitalized on a defensive error to open the scoring with a composed finish. However, Southampton, bottom of the table, fought back. Adam Armstrong converted a rebound following his saved penalty to level the match before halftime, and Mateus Fernandes struck early in the second half to give the hosts a surprising lead.

Salah, undeterred, came to Liverpool’s rescue. He equalized with a clinical finish after Southampton’s goalkeeper Alex McCarthy misjudged a challenge, then calmly converted a late penalty awarded for a handball by Yukinari Sugawara. The brace took Salah’s tally to 12 goals in all competitions this season, including six in his last five league games.
Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, has enjoyed a stellar start at Anfield, winning 16 of his first 18 matches in charge. Despite the team’s inconsistent performance against Southampton, Slot’s tactical adjustments and Salah’s heroics secured the points. The win comes ahead of a crucial stretch for Liverpool, with a Champions League clash against Real Madrid midweek and a league showdown against Manchester City looming.
While the Reds have won 10 of their first 12 league games, Salah’s ability to deliver in tight moments has reinforced Liverpool’s bid for their first Premier League title since 2020. As the season heats up, Liverpool’s resilience under Slot could prove decisive.
