Residents of Luwalege, beside Air Force base on the Airport Road in Abuja, watched in dismay as the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) began demolition of their houses in the early hours of Monday.
A resident who pleaded anonymity said, ‘There was no prior and proper notification. They just came to mark our buildings for demolition about two weeks ago.
“Although, I have been searching for a new house and eventually got one, I wasn’t expecting to meet a demolished building today.
“I came here this morning to pack some of my things to sell and found everything in rumbles. I am deeply hurt and sad,” the distraught resident added.
CRUX NEWS recalls that the Minister of the FCT, Mr. Nyesom Wike had upon assumption of office, announced his plans to demolish illegal shanties and buildings in the nation’s capital.
Although, some residents expressed fear and concern over Wike’s plan, however, some civil groups and citizens applauded the ministers initiative and plan to sanitize the FCT.
