Former Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31. The announcement comes after a career marked by significant achievements but marred by injury struggles, particularly following his transfer from Real Madrid to Manchester United.
In a heartfelt statement released on Wednesday, Varane reflected on his career, stating, “They say all good things must come to an end.” He expressed pride in the challenges he has faced and the incredible moments he experienced, saying, “It is with immense pride and a feeling of fulfillment that I am announcing my retirement from the game that we all love.”
Varane’s recent struggles with injuries culminated in a serious knee injury during his debut for Serie A side Como just 20 minutes into the match last month, which kept him out of action. He emphasized the importance of listening to his heart and instincts, declaring, “It takes a big dose of courage to listen to your heart and your instincts.”
Throughout his career, Varane enjoyed tremendous success. He made 360 appearances for Real Madrid, winning three La Liga titles, four Champions League trophies, and a Copa del Rey, among others. His move to Manchester United in 2021 brought him further accolades, including an FA Cup victory and a Carabao Cup title, with Varane making 95 appearances for the Red Devils.

In addition to his club success, Varane was a key figure in France’s national team, contributing to their 2018 World Cup triumph and earning 93 caps before retiring from international duty in February 2023.
As news of his retirement spread, Varane received tributes from various football clubs and organizations. The French national team expressed gratitude, stating, “Thanks for all the hard work over the years, Raph. We’re all wishing you a happy retirement.” Manchester United also paid homage, saying, “You represented our colors with great distinction during your three seasons at Old Trafford. We thank you for your humility, leadership, and commitment.”
Reflecting on his journey, Varane concluded, “I have no regrets; I wouldn’t change a thing. I have won more than I could have even dreamed of.” As he hangs up his boots, Varane leaves behind a legacy of excellence, humility, and dedication that will inspire future generations of footballers.
