Rangers International Football Club of Enugu secured the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title after a decisive 2-0 victory against Bendel Insurance in Enugu on Sunday, with one match remaining in the season.
The triumph brought Rangers’ total points to an unbeatable 67, following losses by their nearest challengers, Remo Stars and Enyimba, who fell 2-1 to Sunshine Stars and Sporting Lagos respectively. This victory marks Rangers’ 8th league title, solidifying their position as the second most successful club in NPFL history, trailing only Enyimba with nine titles.
The Enugu side, having led the league table for many weeks, faced the threat of losing the title if they failed to secure a win against Bendel Insurance, with Remo Stars and Enyimba poised to capitalize on any slip.
However, Sunday’s match turned out favorably for Rangers, as they not only achieved the crucial victory but also benefited from the losses of their closest competitors.
The first goal came in the 32nd minute when Kenechukwu Agu converted a well-placed free kick, igniting celebrations at the packed Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, also known as the Cathedral.

Chidiebere Nwobodo extended the lead in the 65th minute, easing the tension and prompting fans to chant “holy holy holy Enugu Rangers is another champion” as the team held on for a 2-0 win and the championship.
With 67 points, Rangers’ final league match against Gombe United is now merely a formality, as no team can surpass them. In addition to the title, Rangers have earned a spot in the 2024/2025 CAF Champions League.
The second Nigerian Champions League slot remains contested among Remo Stars, Enyimba, and Shooting Stars, who will battle it out on the last matchday.
