The Nigeria Police Force has announced the recovery of unexploded military ordnances in Maiduguri, Borno State, through the efforts of its Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit (EOD).
In a statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the operation was initiated following reports from vigilant residents in the area. The EOD-CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) team was promptly deployed to secure the locations, ensuring the safe evacuation of all dangerous items without any casualties or property damage.
Details of the Recovery
- Dala Kacchallah Area:
- The team recovered six unexploded projectiles and a mortar bomb near an uncompleted building.
- These items were reportedly washed ashore by recent flooding and left behind by local scavengers.
- Gwange Riverbank:
- A military hand grenade was discovered and safely removed.
- Officers conducted an awareness campaign in the area to educate residents on the risks associated with explosive devices.
The Force has declared the affected areas safe and launched investigations to trace the origins of the recovered items. This effort aims to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun praised the EOD team’s professionalism and responsiveness, highlighting their consistent efforts in averting potential disasters in Borno State.
“The EOD team has repeatedly demonstrated gallantry, recovering numerous improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the state, thereby preventing calamities,” the statement read.
