The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command said it has commenced investigation into the Sunday alleged assassination attempt on the Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello.
FCT Commissioner of Police, Mr Haruna Garba, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.
CP Garba while reacting to a statement by the Kogi Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr Kingsley Fanwo over alleged assassination attempt on Bello said preliminary investigation showed that the alleged attack was a result of altercation between the military personnel at checkpoint and the governor’s motorcade.
”Investigation revealed that the crisis followed the refusal of the governor’s motorcade to stop at the military checkpoint,” the police boss said.
Fanwo had earlier claimed that there was an assassination attempt on the governor, a few kilometres away from Abuja.
He said the governor was on his way to an official engagement from Lokoja but that the attack occurred at about 4p.m. on Sunday from attackers he alleged to be dressed in military uniforms.
Fanwo said the attackers waylaid the governor’s motorcade and fired sporadically at his vehicle and other vehicles in the convoy.
“It took the swift intervention of the security personnel attached to the governor to foil the satanic plans of the unknown soldiers.
“The attacks were at three different points, the last barricade being around Kwali Federal Capital Territory at about 4.20pm,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Kogi state governor has denied that there have been assassination attempts on his life.
Governor Yahaya in a video reacting to the said incident clarified that the claims was false and should be disregarded.
Corroborating the preliminary investigation of the police, Yahaya described the incident as a trivial disagreement between his personal security team and military personnel assigned to protect the road.
He admitted that there was a minor fracas between men of the Nigerian Police Force attached to his convoy and personnel of the military manning the highways.
The governor stressed that the engagement was in the course of both units performing their lawful security duties.
