Tragic Incident at Food Distribution Event
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police have taken into custody several officials from the Catholic Church linked to a catastrophic stampede at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja. The event, which involved distributing food items, led to the tragic loss of ten lives over the weekend.
Public Reaction and Calls for Justice
The arrests come in the wake of public outrage, with groups like the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) pressing for accountability. This follows similar fatal events in Anambra, where 22 individuals perished, and in Oyo State, which had already resulted in legal action against those responsible.

Church Leadership Responds
Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, has publicly criticized the detentions, calling them an example of “misplaced zeal” in his Christmas address. He argued for a more compassionate approach, suggesting that the focus should be on supporting the church and the event organizers through their ordeal rather than prosecuting them.
Police Clarify Actions
SP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police spokesperson, clarified that those detained were initially brought in for questioning and were subsequently released. She emphasized that the police are not targeting the church but are committed to a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and respect for human life. Adeh also indicated that further questioning might be necessary as the inquiry continues.
