Force Spokesman Dismisses Claims as False and Misleading
In a recent press briefing in Abuja, Nigeria Police Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi refuted the accusations made by Amnesty International in their November 28 report, which alleged that the police were responsible for the deaths of at least 24 unarmed protesters during the #EndBadGovernance Protests across six northern states. Adejobi described the report as “false, misleading, and damaging to the image of the force.”
Special Investigative Panel Formed to Examine Allegations
Adejobi confirmed that the Nigeria Police Force has set up a Special Investigative Panel to thoroughly investigate these claims. He stated, “These allegations are not only false and misleading but are also a clear attempt to incite the general public against the police and tarnish the image of the Nigeria Police Force in the eyes of the international community.”
Disputing Specific Incidents
Addressing specific cases from the Amnesty report, Adejobi denied the use of grenades by police in Borno State, as well as allegations of three deaths in the Suleja area of Niger State. He further clarified that claims of a 21-year-old being killed in Katsina were unfounded, supported by local sources confirming no such event took place.
Commitment to Human Rights and Professional Standards
Adejobi emphasized the Force’s commitment to operating under the highest professional standards and upholding human rights and the rule of law. He noted that police personnel involved in protest management receive regular training consistent with international human rights standards.
Demand for Retraction and Apology
The Force is preparing to formally request Amnesty International to retract the report publicly and issue an apology for what they consider to be misinformation. Adejobi concluded by encouraging the public to be cautious of “sensational reports designed to incite mistrust and weaken confidence in law enforcement institutions,” reaffirming the police’s dedication to protecting citizens’ rights and maintaining national security and stability.
