A 25-year-old woman has been arraigned by the police for allegedly refusing to marry a man after receiving expensive gifts and items worth N2.8 million from him. The items, which reportedly included a wig, iPhone, designer bag, and other luxury goods, were said to have been part of the man’s efforts to court her and solidify their relationship with the expectation of marriage.
The man, who had allegedly spent a significant amount on these items, filed a complaint after the woman backed out of the relationship and declined to proceed with marriage plans. The case, which has generated public interest, raises questions about the boundaries between gifts, expectations in relationships, and legal implications in Nigeria.
The woman was charged with obtaining goods under false pretenses, a criminal offense under Nigerian law. She appeared before a magistrate court, where the charges were read.
