Nigeria’s women’s football team, the Super Falcons, have made it through to the Paris 2024 Olympics after beating Bayana Bayana of South Africa 1-0 on aggregate.
This is the first time in 16 years that Nigeria has qualified for the Olympics, and the team is thrilled with their achievement.
The two-legged encounter saw the nine-time African champions win the first leg 1-0 in front of their home fans at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, before playing out a goalless draw in the return leg at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.
Despite the lack of goals in the second leg, both sides had a few chances to score, but it was Nigeria’s defense and goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, who stood out and prevented the hosts from finding the back of the net.
South Africa’s captain, Thembi Kgatlana, tried hard to break the deadlock in the second half, but Nigeria’s solid defense held firm and ensured their team’s qualification.
This result means that Nigeria has secured the continent’s spot for the Olympics, and they will be hoping to make a big impact in France when the Games take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
Nigeria has been drawn in Group C alongside World Cup champions Spain, Japan, and Brazil, and they will be looking to cause some upsets and make their nation proud.
