The Ogun State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has issued a stern warning about an impending strike over poor working conditions if their demands are not met by the state government.
Dr. Azim Kunle Ashimi, Chairman of the Association, disclosed this at a press conference at Doctors’ House, Lukosi, Abeokuta. He noted that the 21-day ultimatum given to the government on June 7, 2024, will expire on June 27, 2024.
Dr. Ashimi emphasized that despite ongoing discussions with government officials, only verbal assurances have been received, with no formal commitment to addressing their grievances.
He urged the citizens of Ogun State to pressurize the government to take immediate action to avert the strike, which could disrupt healthcare services across the state.
The NMA Chairman highlighted significant issues including the surge in operational costs due to increased electricity tariffs, which have severely impacted hospitals like Babcock University Teaching Hospital. He called for concessions for health institutions to prevent these costs from being transferred to patients, making healthcare unaffordable.

Dr. Ashimi also discussed the cholera sensitization programs in collaboration with the Ogun State Ministry of Health and various media houses. He emphasized preventive measures against cholera and provided contact numbers for reporting suspected cases, which will be treated free of charge at designated facilities.
Additionally, Dr. Ashimi addressed the disparity in salaries between state and federal health institutions, warning that this could lead to the collapse of the healthcare system in the state. He also highlighted the growing issue of gambling addiction and its potential impact, urging the government to investigate and address the problem promptly.
In conclusion, Dr. Ashimi called on the Ogun State government to take immediate action to resolve the issues raised by the NMA to prevent the looming strike and ensure continuous healthcare services for the citizens.
He also informed the public about the forthcoming Elective Annual General Meeting scheduled for August 4 to 9, 2024, and expressed gratitude for the support received over the past two years.
