On this day in history in 2003 China launched its first human spaceflight mission, Shenzhou 5, from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northern China. This achievement made China the third country to successfully launch a manned space flight, joining the United States and the Soviet Union/Russia.

On this day in history in 1783 Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier made history with the world’s first manned balloon flight, spending four minutes in the air. The balloon was crafted by Joseph-Michael and Jacques-Ètienne Montgolfier, who also conducted the first balloon flight and sent a duck aloft. Interestingly, the Montgolfier brothers initially tested their invention with a sheep, a duck, and a rooster before piloting a human passenger.
