Sporting Lagos FC began their journey in the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) with a remarkable 2-0 victory over Gombe United FC on Monday.
The match was held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, formerly known as the Onikan Stadium, and witnessed a large turnout of Lagosians who were eager to witness top-flight football in the state again.
For several years, Lagos-based football fans had been deprived of the opportunity to watch their favourite clubs compete at the top level after the demotion of MFM FC and other great club sides such as Stationary Stores, Julius Berger, and Ikorodu United, among others.
However, Sporting Lagos FC’s promotion to the elite league has brought back the thrill and excitement of top-flight football to the state.
Sporting Lagos FC got off to a flying start in the Premier League with an impressive performance against the Jewels of Savannah, as they were able to secure a 2-0 victory.
Rivio Ayemwenre and Clement Nantuam were the heroes of the day, scoring a goal each to give their team a comfortable win.
Ayemwenre opened the scoring for Sporting Lagos FC in the 42nd minute with a header that found the back of the net, after he was left unmarked to receive a cross from Jonathan Alukwu.
Nantuam doubled the lead in the second half, capitalising on Junior Lokosa’s missed over-head kick to score from a goal-mouth scramble.
Although the match was not without some nervy moments, Sporting Lagos FC remained resolute in defence to secure their first-ever win in the NPFL.
Gombe United FC had an opportunity to reduce the deficit from the penalty spot in added time, but Mojeeb Odufeso missed the chance to score a consolation goal for his team.
After the match, Sporting Lagos FC’s coach, Paul Offor, expressed his satisfaction with his team’s performance, describing the win as a morale booster.
He also spoke about his team’s target to win the league.
On the other hand, Gombe United FC’s coach, Mohammed Babaganaru, expressed his satisfaction with his team’s performance despite the loss.
He revealed that his team was quickly assembled for the league after it was postponed, and they just want to take each game as it comes.
Overall, it was an exciting start to the season for Sporting Lagos FC, and their fans will be hoping for more impressive performances as the season progresses.
