The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) has attributed the current fuel scarcity and long queues at filling stations nationwide to recent adverse weather conditions, including heavy rains, lightning, and thunderstorms. During a press conference at the NNPC Towers in Abuja, Dapo Segun, Vice-President (Downstream) of NNPCL, addressed the nation regarding the fuel distribution crisis.
Mr. Segun explained that the severe weather has significantly disrupted the distribution network, causing delays in fuel delivery. He cited issues such as siltation in the Estragos channel, which has hindered the navigation of vessels transporting fuel, and the suspension of petroleum product discharge during lightning and thunderstorms. Additionally, problems with the road network have compounded the situation, affecting the transportation of fuel to various regions.
The scarcity has led to long queues at filling stations and a surge in black market prices, with fuel now being sold for over N1,000 per liter in some areas.

Mr. Segun apologized to Nigerians for the inconvenience and assured that NNPCL is making every effort to address the distribution challenges. He emphasized that while some factors are beyond their control, the corporation is committed to resolving the issue and ensuring adequate fuel supply across the country.
The situation in Lagos, which experienced a temporary supply gap, is reportedly improving with vessels currently offloading fuel.
