Presidential Power Initiative Nears Completion
Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has announced that Nigeria is poised to boost its national grid with an additional 150 megawatts (MW) before the end of 2024. This statement was made during a press briefing at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, following a meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and President Bola Tinubu.
Pilot Phase of PPI Nears 80% Completion
Adelabu highlighted the significant progress of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), stating that the pilot phase is 80% complete. This phase includes the importation, installation, and commissioning of 10 power transformers and 10 mobile substations. “We have just about two left to be commissioned before the year ends,” Adelabu detailed, explaining that this effort has already added 750 MW to the transmission grid’s capacity, contributing to the grid’s recent stability.
Addressing Grid Instability Concerns
This announcement comes in the wake of another national grid collapse, marking the 12th such incident in 2024, which has left millions without power. The minister acknowledged the grid’s fragility and dilapidating condition, attributing the frequent collapses to aging infrastructure. However, he reassured the public that the completion of Phase One of the PPI would lead to a revitalized grid, promising a more stable electricity supply in the future.

Future Stability and Grid Revamp
Adelabu emphasized the need for a comprehensive overhaul to ensure the grid’s reliability. “We need to revamp the entire grid for us to be sure of stability going forward,” he concluded, indicating a commitment to ongoing improvements beyond the current phase.
