Intensified Operations Yield Significant Results
Troops from the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, working alongside other security forces, have escalated their campaign against economic sabotage in the Niger Delta. Operations conducted from December 23 to 29, 2024, resulted in the destruction of 20 illegal refining sites, the arrest of eight individuals suspected of oil theft, the neutralization of 21 boats involved in these crimes, and the seizure of more than 90,000 litres of illegally obtained petroleum products.
Detailed Operations in Asari-Toru and Beyond
A statement released by Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, Acting Deputy Director of 6 Division Army Public Relations, highlighted the effectiveness of these operations. In Asari-Toru’s Buguma area, a significant discovery was made of a large tarpaulin reservoir with 37,000 litres of stolen condensates and a wooden boat used for transport.
Clashes and Arrests in Buguma/Bakana
Further actions in the Buguma/Bakana region led to a confrontation where troops successfully engaged criminal elements, leading to the dismantling of additional illegal refining sites and the recovery of 9,000 litres of Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK). This operation also resulted in the arrest of three suspects.
Broader Regional Successes
The military’s efforts extended to Degema, Omoku, and Etche LGAs, where they managed to recover stolen products and destroy equipment like makeshift ovens and boats. At Imo River, seven more illegal refining sites were taken down, with over 10,000 litres of stolen crude oil being confiscated.
Security Measures Across States
In Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom, similar successes were recorded with the dismantling of illegal refining operations, interception of smuggled petroleum, and prevention of vandalism on a Shell Petroleum Development Company flowline in Ekeremor LGA. Delta State saw both aggressive and strategic operations that significantly disrupted criminal activities, contributing to a safer environment.

Major General Jamal Abdussalam, who oversees the 6 Division, praised the soldiers for their dedication and vigilance. He also appealed to the local populace to contribute by providing useful intelligence to further thwart oil theft and economic sabotage, emphasizing the collective effort needed to protect national interests and promote economic stability in the region.
