Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago of Niger State has sparked a social media frenzy after a video surfaced showing him commanding a security aide to slap a man believed to be an Islamic cleric.
In the widely-shared footage, Governor Bago, clad in a white agbada and accompanied by officials, is seen addressing a small gathering.
He speaks to the crowd about a young man kneeling before him and, moments later, instructs that the man be slapped and detained.
Eyewitness Ibrahim Makama recounted that the incident took place when the Governor asked for an Imam to lead a prayer.

In an unexpected turn, the young man stepped forward, volunteering to lead the prayer.
Governor Bago then questioned him, saying,
“Are you an Imam? This is a display of indiscipline. I asked for the Imam to pray, not you.”
As a result of this exchange, the young man was ordered to kneel and was subsequently arrested.
