Mrs. Jane Egerton-Idehen, the Managing Director of Nigerian Satellite Communications Ltd. (NIGCOMSAT), is set to be the first woman to deliver the 2024 Herbert Macaulay Memorial Lecture (HMML) at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), according to a statement released in Nsukka on Tuesday by Prof. Emenike Ejiogu, Dean of the UNN Faculty of Engineering.
Prof. Ejiogu stated that the HMML, established in 1978 by the faculty, aims to honor and preserve the memory of Herbert Macaulay, an engineer and Nigeria’s leading nationalist. The lecture is scheduled for May 4 at the university’s Nsukka campus.
Egerton-Idehen, an engineer with a distinguished reputation, will be the first woman to give the lecture since its inception 46 years ago.
Prof. Joseph Terlumun, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, and an alumnus of UNN with master’s and PhD degrees in Water Resources and Environmental Engineering obtained in 2007 and 2011, respectively, will chair the event.
The dean revealed that a highlight of the 2024 HMML will be the unveiling of a new multipurpose three-story building for the faculty, constructed by the 1985 engineering class known as AGBEBI 85 CLASS.
The Vice Chancellor of UNN, Prof. Charles Igwe, performed the groundbreaking ceremony on October 8, 2020.
The building features modern classrooms, offices for lecturers and administrative staff, and a conference hall on the top floor, serving as a venue for academic discussions, seminars, and symposiums.
Major Gen. Okechukwu Ugo (Retired) coordinated the project, while engineers Mr. Chidozie Eze and Mr. Christopher Odo supervised the construction to ensure quality control and adherence to specifications.
