The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCom) has achieved a significant victory in the fight against human trafficking by securing the freedom of two Nigerian girls who were lured into prostitution in Ghana.
This successful rescue comes shortly after NIDCom’s recent mission, where they rescued 11 girls in similar circumstances the CRUX NEWS reports.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, NIDCom Chairperson, announced the news in an official statement, expressing deep appreciation to the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Ghana, specifically commending the leadership of Chairman, BOT, Chief Calistus, for their crucial role in facilitating the rescue operation.
The two young women, now safe and secure, hail from Edo and Lagos States but were residing in Lagos before their abduction. Plans are underway to ensure their safe return to Nigeria, where they will be placed in the care of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to receive comprehensive support and assistance with reintegration into their communities.
Dabiri-Erewa also emphasized the urgency of a unified front in combating human trafficking in all its forms, highlighting it as a modern-day form of slavery that tears lives apart.
This successful rescue mission serves as a beacon of hope in the ongoing fight against human trafficking networks. The collaborative efforts of NIDCom and NIDO Ghana exemplify the power of coordinated action in disrupting these criminal operations and bringing victims back to safety.
However, Dabiri-Erewa’s renewed call to action serves as a stark reminder of the constant vigilance required. Dismantling trafficking rings and preventing further exploitation requires a multifaceted approach. Law enforcement agencies must be well-equipped to investigate and prosecute traffickers.
Public awareness campaigns are crucial to educate potential victims about the dangers of trafficking and empower them to identify and avoid risky situations. Additionally, creating economic opportunities in communities most vulnerable to trafficking can mitigate the lure of false promises used by traffickers to exploit their victims.
By employing a comprehensive strategy that addresses prevention, intervention, and victim support, we can create a future where these barbaric acts of human trafficking are eradicated.
