Officials from the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) based in Jordan, responsible for overseeing matters in Iraq, have successfully intervened to facilitate the return of Eniola Isaac, a 28-year-old Nigerian woman who was trafficked. This action followed a distressing report highlighting how Isaac was deceived with promises of a better life, only to face severe abuse, physical assaults, and mistreatment by her employer in Iraq.
Urgent Plea for Help
Overwhelmed by her situation, Isaac made pleas to Nigerian authorities for assistance to return to her homeland, escaping the harsh realities she encountered.
NiDCOM’s Response and Broader Issues
NiDCOM issued an update via their official X account on Thursday, emphasizing that Isaac’s case is indicative of a growing issue where Nigerians are trafficked to Iraq under deceptive conditions. Isaac is scheduled to return to Nigeria on January 3rd, thanks to the efforts of the Nigerian mission.

Investigation into Suspicious Death
In addition to Isaac’s rescue, NiDCOM is also looking into the suspicious death of another Nigerian woman who had traveled to Iraq to work as a carer. The Nigerian government has insisted on an autopsy to clarify the circumstances of her death.

NiDCOM has issued a stern warning about the dangers posed by unscrupulous agents who deceitfully lure young Nigerian women into Iraq with false promises. These agents often lead victims into situations of slavery and forced prostitution, highlighting the urgent need for vigilance and protective measures against such trafficking networks.
