Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja Park Opens in Maxwell Khobe Cantonment
On Saturday, Major General AE Abubakar, the General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander of Operation SAFE HAVEN, officially opened the Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja Recreational Park at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Jos, Plateau State. The park is named in tribute to Mrs. Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja, the former President of the Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association (NAOWA), recognizing her significant efforts in enhancing the welfare of military personnel and their families, particularly within the 3 Division.
Park Features Modern Amenities for Community Well-being
The park boasts an array of state-of-the-art recreational facilities intended to improve the quality of life for the barracks community. Highlights include a swimming pool, a synthetic football pitch suitable for 5-a-side games, and various fun activities like trampolines, bouncy castles, electric trains, bicycles, swings, and battery-operated bikes. Floodlights ensure that these facilities can be enjoyed at all hours.
General Abubakar Advocates for Community Use and Legacy
During the grand opening, Major General Abubakar spoke on the importance of the park not only as a recreational area but as a cornerstone for community cohesion, physical activity, and relaxation. He emphasized the park’s role in fostering family bonds, noting that the nearest similar facility was a considerable distance away, making this new park a timely and valuable addition.
A Tribute to Lt. Gen. TA Lagbaja’s Legacy
The event also doubled as a memorial to the late Lt. Gen. TA Lagbaja, the 23rd Chief of Army Staff, whose vision for community welfare this park embodies. Major General Abubakar highlighted Lagbaja’s enduring influence in the military and local community, stating, “We remember Gen Lagbaja not only for his service but for his belief in the importance of community and welfare.”
