The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced a two-week postponement of the application process for student loans at state institutions. This delay, effective from the initially planned June 25th, 2024 start date, is due to incomplete data submissions by many state-owned institutions.
According to a statement released by NELFUND’s Head of Media and Public Relations, Nasir Ayitogo, several state institutions have failed to upload crucial student data and fee information to the NELFUND Student Verification System (SVS). This incomplete data makes it difficult for NELFUND to verify student eligibility and ensure a smooth application process.
The announcement revealed concerningly low data submission rates. Out of a total of 48 state universities, only 20 have completed the data entry process.

Similarly, just 12 out of 54 state colleges and only 2 out of 49 state polytechnics have complied.
NELFUND highlighted the importance of complete and accurate data for a seamless application process. They specify that the required information includes JAMB numbers, matriculation numbers, admission numbers, full names, student levels, faculties, departments, program durations, fees, and student genders. Incomplete or inaccurate data submissions could lead to application delays or even disqualifications for affected students.
NELFUND urged all state institutions to expedite the data submission process and prioritize data accuracy. They emphasized the potential disadvantages students might face if their institutions miss the revised deadline (July 10th, 2024) for complete data submission. NELFUND expressed appreciation to institutions that have already complied and encouraged others to follow suit to ensure all eligible students have access to this critical loan program.
