Residents of Naples were left shaken after a 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck the volcanic region of Campi Flegrei on Monday evening, just hours before the Champions League game between Napoli and Real Madrid.
The quake, which occurred shortly after 10 pm, caused panic among locals who fled to the streets.
The epicentre was located at a depth of around two miles between Naples and Pozzuoli, according to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).
This latest tremor is the most recent in a series of seismic activity in the region, which has been ongoing in recent days.
In fact, last week, a 4.2-magnitude quake was recorded in the same area, the strongest in the past 40 years.
INGV director Mario Di Vito has warned that “it is possible that there will be tremors of greater intensity” in the near future, which has caused concern among the residents in the region.

Despite the earthquake, the match between Napoli and Real Madrid would still go ahead as planned at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.
Both teams were vying for the top spot in Group C, and the game was fiercely contested.
Madrid’s coach, Carlo Ancelotti, acknowledged the strength of the opposition, saying “We’ll play against one of the best teams in Italy. They did very well last year. It will be a competitive and evenly matched game as they have a high level. It’s going to be the toughest game of the group stage for us. I don’t want to say that we’re used to it, but the shirt of this club weighs on us.”
