Napoli, the Italian football club and champions of Serie A, have announced the appointment of Walter Mazzarri as their new coach.
The 62-year-old will take over from Rudi Garcia, who was sacked after the team’s defeat by Empoli left the club on just 21 points, a considerable 10 points behind the league leaders Inter Milan.
Napoli’s current season has been plagued with losses, having lost three of their first 12 league games, at home by Lazio and Fiorentina, and most recently, to Empoli.
The team has also drawn three games, leaving them in fourth position, two points behind AC Milan, and eight adrift of Juventus in second.
The lacklustre start to the season has been a cause of concern for Napoli’s fans and management alike.

Garcia’s tactics had failed to produce a result against Empoli, who are currently 17th in the standings.
As a result, the club has decided to take action and bring in Mazzarri, who previously managed the team from 2009-2013.
Mazzarri returns to Napoli for a second spell, after having helped the team qualify for the group stage of the Champions League in his first season.
Mazzarri’s appointment comes at a time when Napoli are at risk of falling away in this season’s title race, having won their first Scudetto since 1990 under the management of Luciano Spalletti, who resigned in June.
At the same stage last season, Napoli were unbeaten in Serie A, leading with 10 wins and two draws.
The club will be hoping that Mazzarri can help them regain their form and compete for the Serie A title once again.
