Protest at Moshood Abiola Stadium
Members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) staged a demonstration at the Moshood Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta, protesting against the recent appointment of Eric Sekou Chelle as the head coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles. The students called for an immediate reversal by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Strong Condemnation from NANS
Abdul Yekinn Odunayo, the Clerk of the Senate for NANS, led the protest, lambasting the NFF’s decision. He articulated that the choice of Chelle did not meet the aspirations of Nigerian football fans and students. Odunayo highlighted the need for a coach who could effectively utilize Nigeria’s wealth of football talent.
Threat of Nationwide Action
In response to what they perceive as an oversight by the NFF, NANS has threatened to expand their protest nationwide if their demands are not met. They advocate for a coach with superior tactical acumen to lead the Super Eagles into future competitions.

“Today, we gather to voice our discontent regarding a decision that has left us perplexed and has been widely criticized by both students and sports fans,” declared Odunayo. He further criticized the appointment as an affront to the pool of skilled local coaches available in Nigeria, announcing plans for further protests unless the decision is reconsidered.

Background on Eric Chelle’s Appointment
The NFF officially named Éric Sékou Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles on Tuesday. Chelle, who has previously led the Malian national team and coached several clubs in France and Algeria, was tasked with securing Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His tenure with Mali ended in June 2024, after which he was appointed to helm Nigeria’s team.
