Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano, marked his dramatic return to the throne on Friday with a speech emphasizing divine intervention and the significance of his reinstatement for Kano’s history.
Following his official reappointment by Governor Abba Yusuf at the Kano State Government House, Sanusi addressed the gathering. He referenced an Arabic proverb, highlighting the preordained nature of events. He stressed that everything that happens is ultimately dictated by Allah, a message intended for those seeking wisdom in life’s twists and turns.
Sanusi emphasized the divine timing of his return. He recalled his initial appointment as Emir in 2014 by former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso. He pointed out the symbolic gap of ten years, signifying a divinely orchestrated cycle. Sanusi expressed his belief that leadership is bestowed by God at His chosen time, and no human power can override that divine decree.

Sanusi went on to highlight the unprecedented nature of his reinstatement. He noted that Kano’s rich history, stretching back over a thousand years to the reign of Emir Bagauda, had never witnessed a similar instance. He compared his situation to the brief dethronement of Emir Muhammadu Koguna centuries ago, further emphasizing the historical weight of his return.
Sanusi’s speech transcended his personal experience. He expressed concern about a worrying trend across northern Nigeria – the political manipulation of traditional emirates. He criticized the division of single emirates into a multitude of smaller ones, arguing that it undermines the historical significance and unity of these institutions.
Sanusi praised Governor Yusuf and the state assembly for their crucial role in reversing this trend. He described their actions as a “rescue mission” that saved Kano from a future fragmented by political manoeuvring. He envisioned a scenario where the initial division could have led to a proliferation of Emirs, jeopardizing the traditional structure.
Governor Yusuf, while presenting the appointment letter, emphasized Sanusi’s competence, credibility, and popularity as factors in his reinstatement. He urged the Emir to utilize his position to unite the Kano Emirate and foster harmony between different Islamic sects within the state.
