Tragic Bombing in Silame
A Nigerian Air Force fighter jet, targeting the Lakurawa terrorist group, inadvertently bombed two villages in the Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The incident resulted in numerous casualties among the local populace.
Casualties and Injuries
The attack, which took place around 7 am on Wednesday, has led to fears of many deaths and numerous injuries within the affected communities of Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa.
Proximity to Terrorist Hideout
Malam Yahya, a resident of Silame, explained that these villages lie close to Surame Forest, known to be a refuge for the Lakurawa terrorists and other bandits. This proximity likely contributed to the tragic error.
Official Confirmation and Damage Assessment
Alhaji Abubakar Muhammad Daftarana, the Chairman of Silame LGA, confirmed the airstrike, indicating that efforts were underway to assess the full extent of the damage and the precise number of casualties. “The villagers were sitting peacefully when the bombs started falling. They were innocent, peace-loving people with no criminal records,” he stated, emphasizing the unintended nature of the attack.
Police Decline Comment
ASP Ahmad Rufa’i, the Spokesman for the Sokoto State Police Command, refrained from commenting on the incident, clarifying that it was not within the jurisdiction of the police operations.
This unfortunate event highlights the challenges of conducting military operations in areas close to civilian populations, underscoring the need for precision and accountability in such missions.
