Mexico has announced its withdrawal from the bidding process to host the 2036 Olympic Games, citing the highly competitive nature of the race.
In October 2022, the country’s former Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, and the National Olympic Committee (COM) revealed that Mexico intended to host the 2036 Olympics, which would be the second time the country had hosted the Summer Games, following the successful hosting of the 1968 Olympics.
However, South Korea, India, Egypt, and Qatar have all expressed their interest in bidding for the same event, making the competition significantly more challenging.
In light of this, the president of the COM, Maria Jose Alcala, has now confirmed that Mexico will not be bidding for the 2036 Olympic Games, but instead, the country is considering launching a bid for the Youth Olympic Games, where they believe they have a greater chance of success.
Alcala stated that the COM has already held talks with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to discuss this option, and they are currently exploring the feasibility of such a bid.

Alcala also revealed that Mexico is considering bidding for the 2027 Pan American Games after the northern state of Nuevo Leon expressed their interest in hosting the event.
This comes after the Colombian city of Barranquilla lost the hosting rights for the event due to its failure to meet its contractual obligations.
Alcala confirmed that there is an ongoing discussion with Nuevo Leon regarding the possibility of hosting the Pan American Games, and they are considering the logistics and feasibility of such a bid.
Overall, it appears that Mexico is focusing its efforts on hosting the Youth Olympic Games and the Pan American Games, given the intense competition for the 2036 Olympic Games.
The country has a rich history of hosting international sporting events and is keen to maintain its reputation as a leading sporting destination.
